It not only protects our skin from harmful reactions of sun rays but also prevents long-term skin damages. Study says, regular application and reapplication of effective sunscreen prevents premature ageing and also the need for anti-ageing products.

Lotus Herbals is a big name among Indian affordable sunscreen brands and this Matte Look sunscreen never drops from their bestseller list. I have been an avid user of this sunscreen for years before I found out more skin-friendly options.

Lotus Herbals Safe Sun 3-in-1 Matte Look Daily Sunblock SPF 40 PA+++ is a tinted moisturiser, sun block and skin lightner, all in one.

This 3-in-1 daily sun block is a revolutionary sun protection formulation which combines broad-spectrum UVA & UVB protection with skin lightening ingredients to give a uniform matte finish to your skin.

Its fast absorption and non-greasy formula ensures a shine-free, light and clean feel.

Packaging: This sunscreen comes in a deep yellow coloured plastic squeeze tube. The flip-top cap shuts tightly. The only problem of this tube is its opacity. You have to squeeze and squeeze to get the product out when the product reaches the bottom.

You’ll find the complete ingredients in the pack. The claims and usgae instructions are also there. The packaging is a very standard one but it is very sturdy and travel-safe at the same time.

Colour & Consistency: This is a tinted sunscreen. Lotus used Iron oxides to bring the tint. The tint is nothing compared to BB creams; there is almost no coverage. That’s why this one shade works for all skin tones.

The consistency is medium. It is not a thick and creamy product. This light gel-cream kind of sunscreen sets matte on the skin. It is not a water-proof sunscreen.

Fragrance: The Safe Sun sunscreen has a floral fragrance. I do like the fragrance but I would have loved it more if it was a fragrance free product. The smell does not stay long. Once the product sets matte into the skin, the smell goes away.

Quantity & Price: This sunscreen is priced at Rs.275 for 50gm. Its 100gm size costs Rs.395. Lotus products, in general, are slightly expensive than most Indian budget-friendly brands like Pond’s or Clean & Clear.

It is available at discounts sometimes if you make online purchase. The offline Lotus stores give 10-15% discounts year round.

My Overall Thoughts:

I have always had problems with sunscreens. My acne prone skin did not like the traditional thick cream based sunscreens. Eventually I found this one out in 2008-09 and since then I continued with this for a straight 4-5 years.

Within this time more and more non-comedogenic sunscreens started launching and I finally drifted toward other brands. Let’s talk about why I ditched my once-holygrail sunscreen.

This is a mattifying ‘chemical’ sunscreen; it does not have any significant mineral sunscreens in the ingredients. It applies evenly on the skin; there is no patchiness or white cast.

It takes a few seconds to set matte and then the skin stays matte unless you sweat. I have heavy sweating issues and this one melts right away. It stains and the stain is almost impossible to remove. The formula has a slight cooling feel to it.

I enjoyed this sensation until I started using salicylic acid cleansers. Salicylic acid makes the skin sensitive to some extent and that’s why my skin started giving a strong burning sensation after applying this one.

Later I found out, my skin is sensitive to ‘oxybenzone’ and ‘avobenzone’. These are actually the main components of a chemical sunscreens like this one. So, I had to leave Lotus Herbals Safe Sun 3-in-1 Matte Look Daily Sunblock for a mineral based sunscreen.
