Review – SodaBottleOpenerWala CyberHub, Gurgaon

I am a foodie but with a small appetite that’s the reason why I am always inclined towards cafe & fast food restaurants. There you can have a taste of more than 5 dishes without over stuffing yourself. SodaBottleOpenerWala is one name that was making the rounds in my friend circle and everyone was going gaga over the food quality & taste. I knew I had to be there .. once.. The name itself if so appealing.

SodaBottleOpenerWala (Part Of Olive Bar & Kitchen) opens its doors to revive this lost tradition bringing with it – typical Parsi cuisine and some Irani specialties, in a fun, quirky and contemporary avatar.

Irani Cafes were famous for their inexpensive food, eccentric owners and distinctive menus incorporating dishes like the stick chai (extremely sweet); bun maska (crusty bread with butter) kheema pao (mince curry with bread) and typical Parsi cutlets, patties, rolls, fruitcakes, and confectionary. Today however Irani cafes serve a wide range of cuisine.

Cafe lives up to its claims of quirkiness at its best. Look at the pictures of the menu (which was pasted on a square wooden plank). I couldn’t help but laugh as I went through it.

Cafe isn’t huge but still has quite good space. It has old rustic charm to it, from pink & white checker-board table cloth to old antique brass telephone on the counter everything will take you to the old era. Here are some pictures of the cafe that were sent to me by the pr team, since it was quite packed when I visited the place.

Huge glass jars on the shelves behind the counter had some of my favorite candies that I used to hog on when I was a kid. Especially that fish shaped sweet & spicy candy.

Lets quickly move onto the food we had . SodaBottleOpenerWala serves liquor as well however both of us decided to pick non-alcoholic drinks. I got Masala Pepsi and my husband ordered for Limbu Soda Pani. Masala Pepsi tasted nice, it didn’t taste like pepsi at all.

Being a cafe menu , it is limited but quite good with some really interesting snack & starters.

We started with Chicken Farcha – A Parsi style fried chicken served with green chutney. I can’t explain how delicious it was. Juicy succulent chicken inside and crispy skin outside and that green chutney was the cherry on top. I would definitely recommend it if you want to grab a quick bite that is still filling. The container it was served in was equally interesting !

Bhendi Bazar Sheekh Paratha. Two mutton seekh Kababs served on a crispy bread/paratha. Seekh was tasty & moderately spiced. I made a mutton-seekh roll and ate it like that only. Nothing tasted greasy or oily.

Next up – Chilli Cheese Pao – True to its name it had cheese & chilli , however I found the bread slightly soggy due to the sauce beneath cheese.

Eggs Kejriwal – Nope this dish doesn’t have to do anything with Mr Arvind Kejriwal, It is named after Mr Devi Prasad Kejriwal’s favorite Dish at Wellington Club mumbai (according to what was written on the menu). I guess its egg benedict & cheese on crispy bread. It tasted like heaven, I loved it even though I am not much fond of egg benedict.

Mutton Berry Pulao and Parsi Mutton Masala. Pulao was a refeshing twist in the main course, it had that sweet sour punch from the berries and heat from the spices, however it was not much spicy. Mutton Masala had thick gravy which went nicely with pulao.

In desserts we had all time favorite – Chocolate Brownie with Ice Cream

Whole ambience has relaxed , laid back feel and the staff is pretty courteous. SodaBottleOpenerWala has recently opened in Khan Market as well. For me the stand out dishes were Chicken Farcha & Bhendi Bazar Sheekh Paratha. I can see myself going back for these two dishes. Taste wise I loved everything that was served to us.
