Picking a foundation and matching it to ones on skin tone is the biggest task in makeup! If you find the right shade and undertone then you are the luckiest person on earth. Oxidation of foundation is a major problem. Oxidation means that the foundation reacts with external components, resulting in a change of shade to a darker one. People sometimes call this as foundation turning orange. It basically means your foundation will get darker on your skin ultimately making you look like an Oompa-Loompa!
Now you can’t tell from the bottle of a foundation if it will oxidize on your skin because each formulation reacts differently on different skin. To know that, you need to test it out and give it time to react. It takes around a couple of hours for a foundation to prove if it oxidizes. So next time you go foundation hunting apply it at the store and give it some time to settle on the skin. If it doesn’t react then you can buy the foundation with no fear.
Natural oils that are secreted from our skin are one major reason why foundation oxidizes. The oils react with ingredients on the foundation leading it to change in the shade. Sometimes even sunscreens do react the same way with foundations.
The first solution to this issue is by using a primer. Primer acts as a barrier between your skin and makeup .So it doesn’t let the natural oils of the skin to mix up with foundation. This way your foundation will not change its shade.
The next thing that you can do is by applying an antioxidant serum that is suitable for your skin. You can consult a dermatologist and find out what serum works best for your skin. The antioxidant will prevent any further oxidation on the surface of the skin.
When moisture is stuck onto the face it also reacts with the foundation. So when you start prepping your skin for makeup, allow some time for the moisturiser to sink into the skin. Then dab any excess moisture with the help of a soft tissue. Apply primer and repeat the same step and only then layer foundation. In each step, we have taken out any possible moisture with tissue and hence there shall not be any oxidation. And finally, you must set your foundation to mattify and set it. This to an extent will keep oxidation away.
