What is a Photofacial & My Experience

Due to continuous breakouts/ acne on my jawline I got some red/brown scarring. I tried couple of lotions & potions but they take forever to show results and half of the the times they break me out making the condition more miserable. So during my recent visits to The Skin Center, I spoke to Dr Sirisha Singh about the Clinical Treatments for Uneven skintone and considering how sensitive my skin is, She decided to go ahead with Photofacial.

What is a Photo-Facial?

Also called photo-rejuvenation, it is a light based skin treatment. Light of fixed energy and wavelength is flashed through the skin. This light then gets absorbed by chromophores (pigments) in the skin. The chromophores get heated up and destroyed. When the light gets absorbed by the black pigment (melanin), the tan and freckles fade away. When the light gets absorbed by oxyhaemoglobin (the red pigment in broken capillaries), the broken capillaries fade away. This reduction in blemishes leaves the skin with a more uniform tone and texture.

This procedure is suitable for people in their 20’s onwards. People with tanned skin, uneven skin tone, freckles and broken capillaries on the skin are suitable candidates. Several people get it done as an alternative to a regular salon facial as it also slows down the signs of ageing. The treatment can be carried out on the neck, the upper chest, the arms and legs too. Any area of the skin that is exposed and gets UV induced damage can be treated.

The procedure starts with icing of the skin to cool down the skin, a cool gel is then applied all over the area to be treated. Light is then flashed through the skin. The treatment is painless but there may be a sensation of warmth on the skin. After the procedure, it is normal to have some tingling sensation of the skin. The skin may look red and bumpy for a few hours. Apart from this, it is a safe procedure.

A glow in the skin and a reduction in tan is evident after the first session itself. After about 3-4 sessions, the blemishes fade away. After about 6 sessions, there is some tightening of the skin and a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. This procedure also slows down the ageing process and people undergoing regular photo-facials will have younger and firmer looking skin for longer.

If one is looking for a skin treatment which is gentle on the skin, more effective than a salon facial, safe and helps in maintaining the health of the skin, the photo-facial may be a good option.

My Experience & Results

Dr Sirisha Explained me the whole procedure. I was a bit nervous but the session went on smoothly. It took her just 15 minutes to do the PhotoFacial, and the only thing I could feet was the sensation of Light when it was flashed on my skin. I wore protective glasses and kept my eyes closed but still I could feel the flash of light. I didn’t feel any heat or irritation during or post treatment.

Ever since I have started getting treatments for Uneven Skintone, a sunscreen is an integral part of my skincare routine. It doesn’t matter whether I am indoor or outdoor, I always wear sunscreen. And after photofacial I am supposed to keep doing the same to prevent UV damage to my skin.

I never thought that the result would be so visible only after the first session. My skin looked bright and a bit even, and the effect wasn’t short term. However to see the scars fade and skin even toned one is advised to go for at least 4-5 (or depending on the level of hyper pigmentation/ blemishes) sessions. I am definitely considering getting more sessions since the results are visible. Each Session of PhotoFacial costs Rs 5000.
