Maybelline is one brand that keeps coming up with new launches every other month. This time they have launched Matte version of their Lip Polishes, – Velvet Matte Lip Color. Packaging is almost the same, except for the matte black cap. I was quite excited about this launch and looked for it everywhere, but sadly the range wasn’t available in most of the multi-brand stores.. Couple of days ago only I spotted Maybelline Velvet Matte Lip Color at Shoppers Stop and bought 5 out of available 7-8 shades.
Maybelline Velvet Matte Lip Color (Rs 475)
Shades – All the shades are numbered and have no name. I have got – MAT 5 which is a nice orange, MAT 6 is a berry toned lip color, which undoubtedly is my favorite color out of the entire range. MAT 7 is a red, a warm toned red, MAT 8 is a coral-orange , MAT 10 is a pretty purple-pink.
Texture & Formula – Unfortunately these are rather creamy than matte. I was hoping them to be like NYX matte lip creams , because that’s how a velvet matte formula should be, however these are more like creamy lip colors that remain creamy no matter how long you wear them for. So that means color doesn’t set into a matte finish , also it transfers a lot and feels heavy on the lips. If you have dry lips, then you might find the formula pleasant as it doesn’t highlight chapped lips, and feels comfortable throughout the wear.
Pigmentation – Pigmentation varies across the board, shades like MAT 6 & 7 are quite opaque, MAT 5, 8 & 10 are sheer-medium. Also the challenge is that if you layer it to build the coverage, the product starts to collect around the inner part of the lips, and looks gloopy & thick.
Staying Power – On me Maybelline Velvet Matte Lip Color stays on for 2-4 hours. Darker colors have a better formula & staying power than the lighter shades.

Overall Thoughts
I am on the fence about the product. I like Maybelline Velvet lip colors for their moisturizing properties and pigmentation. But the fact that they aren’t matte or set completely is disappointing. I am not much of a gloss person and liquid lip colors that don’t set aren’t my preferred kind of formulas. well that can be completely a personal choice and if you love glossy liquid lip colors these will be right up your ally.
