It’s not a huge secret though as it has been in the market for quite a few years now. Today I will share how this Tailam has helped my skin. Before getting into the product review I would like to shed a little light on the Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala where the Kumkumadi Tailam is made.

The Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala is a Charitable Trust. It was established in 1902 by Shri P.S. Varier. Sri P. S. Varier, scion of an illustrious family of Kottakkal in the Malabar region of Kerala, was an extraordinary man. He was a multi-faceted personality: a renowned Ayurvedic scholar and academician, an able practitioner; a successful entrepreneur, and a genuine philanthropist. Sri Varier studied Ayurveda under the classical Guru Kula system. He also acquired proficiency in the practice of Allopathy. In late 1902, Sri Varier founded the Arya Vaidya Sala, Kottakkal, for the preparation of authentic Ayurvedic medicines.

I have grown up using various products for hair care and skin care from this brand. Also for the menstrual pain they have medicines which help in relieving a lot of the pain. When I heard about the Kumkumadi Thailam, I had to buy it. Let’s see how it worked for me.

Product description – Kumkumadi Thailam is an Ayurvedic herbal oil used for face massaging. It is helpful to improve skin texture, complexion and also to relieve skin problems such as acne, scars etc. Kumkuma means saffron, which is the main ingredient of this medicine.

How to use:

Take 2-3 drops and massage it into the face.

Ingredients

Kumkuma (saffron), Usira, Kaliya, Laksha, Yashtyahva, Chandana (sandalwood), Nyagrodhapada, Padmaka, Padmakesara, Nilotpala, Manjishtha, Pattanga, Ajakshira, Taila

Packaging – Kottakkal Kumkumadi Tailam comes in a pink and white cardboard box with the name and details of the product written in black on the box. The actual Thailam comes in a small plastic bottle with a nozzle. The bottle reminds you of those eye drop bottles. The packaging is very convenient. The nozzle top helps in dispersing the right amount of product and prevents product wastage and it’s also hygienic. The only con though is that the packaging is not travel friendly. Though it is light weight, but if not kept upright the product tends to leak. But I don’t need it during travel anyway. I need it post the travel period, coz that’s when my skin needs more care.

Texture – The Thailam is organgish red in colour that looks a lot like saffron. The consistency of the Thailam is not very thick, it’s a bit runny. But it only helps in the application. A very tiny amount is enough to cover the entire face. It has an oily finish, but gets absorbed into the skin within a few minutes, provided you do not use a lot. Doesn’t feel heavy on the skin though. I sometimes add a drop or two to my night cream and use too. It smells strongly of saffron and sandalwood. The fragrance maybe putting off for some, but I like it a lot.

My Experience

I have been using Kottakkal Kumkumadi Tailam for 6 months now. I won’t say I have regularly used it for 6 months. But I used it most of the time, sometimes with and sometimes without the night cream. I am on my second bottle now.

I take 2-3 drops and massage it all over my skin, concentrating on the areas around my nose and mouth as that’s where I get the maximum pigmentation and discolouration. I sometimes add a drop or two to my night cream and use it that way too. I also use it on my under eyes before applying the eye cream. And on the days I feel lazy I use just this under my eyes.

Over the months of regular usage I have seen my skin getting softer and plumper. The discolouration around my nose and mouth has also gone down. It has also helped in reducing the under eye darkness.

I do not get pimples as such, but my skin gets bumpy at times. But with the regular use of this one that has also reduced. I sometimes spritz rose water on my skin before applying the Thailam; it helps my skin to absorb it better.

One thing is that this is an Ayurvedic product, you cannot see results overnight. You have to be regular in use at least for a month to see results. Also since it is an Ayurvedic product it may not suit all because of certain ingredients. So, I would advise you to test it out before buying.

Though I do not have pimples I have heard that it reduces pimples also. So oily skinned beauties can also use it. But my advice to them is that, instead of using overnight, keep it on your skin for half an hour to one hour, wash it with a gentle cleanser and follow it up with your regular night cream.

With regular use, gradually you will see a marked difference in your skin texture and reduction of blemishes and discolouration. Renowned hair and makeup artist Ambika Pillai also recommends it.

Overall Thoughts

The Kottakkal Kumkumadi Tailam is definitely a miraculous fluid which helps in improving and smoothing the skin texture. It reduces the acne scars, blemishes and discolouration. A small amount of product is enough to cover the desired area. One bottle can last you upto 2-3 months with regular usage. The price for the quality of product is quite negligible. Highly recommend it. And it is definitely a cheaper alternative to the pricier counterparts in the market. Love it.
