How To Choose Perfect Necklace For Saree

Finding the right accessories for your saree can be quite a time consuming process especially when you are in a hurry. And even if not, a lot of you face the problem of matching the neckpieces to your saree which is a vital part of dressing up as the right accessories can perk up even a simple outfit. Here are few tips and advices that will help you choose the perfect necklace for your saree in a jiffy.

Let us first categorize the sarees we all wear:

  • Western:

Plain synthetic sarees in a single color:

Chiffon or georgette sarees in a single color like fuchsia, black or turquoise require heavy accessorizing as plain sarees can be a bit dull without proper jewellery. Heavy beaded neck pieces in contrast colour or jewellery made of gold or silver balls are best for this look. Matching the colour of the necklace to the paar(border) of the saree is a tip you can use. For example if the paar/ boarder is golden go with golden jewellery, DO NOT wear silver against gold decorations or vice versa.

If the paar/boarder is broad, wear thin necklaces as you do not want to end up looking like a Rajput emperor! And if the paar is thin it will allow you a little more space to go for statement neckpieces, something that will instantly catch attention.

Synthetic saree in dual colours/ombre shades:

If there are two or more colours in your saree, then find out the dominant colour and then forget about it! Next find out the second most important colour or the colour that generally adorns the lower part of the saree and match your necklace to it. Remember the least important colour will look the prettiest on your neck since it is given least priority in your saree.

  1. Designer sarees: As designer sarees are already very heavily adorned, sleek diamond or crystal jewellery go best with it. Maybe a classy drop necklace with matching earrings.
  2. Aztec prints/ geometric prints or floral print saree:

I personally prefer not to wear any necklaces with such synthetics and I stick to statement earrings and bracelets. But if you must wear, then stick to simple ones like pearl necklaces in the form of choker or princess necklaces.

Traditional/Ethnic:

  1. Silk Sarees: Necklaces are a part of our Indian heritage and so are silk sarees. You have the freedom to wear heavy neckpieces with silk sarees which of course you will exercise no matter whether I give you the license or not! Gold is the best option even though some silk sarees do allow you to wear silver as well; and by gold I mean real gold necklace or gold-plated ones. You can experiment with the length and thickness according to your likes. Basically Kanjeevaram, Ikkat, Benarasi and other silks allow you to wear grams and grams of gold; if you have it, flaunt it!
  2. Ethnic synthetics/lehenga saree/: Kundan and Jadwa necklaces look best with traditional synthetics.
  3. Cotton sarees/Tant sarees: Tant is all about grace and simplicity. It’s best to wear thread necklaces or crystal-beads necklaces with it. Handloom thread jewellery has taken the market by storm and to our delight these are available at affordable rates.
  4. Handlooms and folk-art sarees: Oxidized necklaces look best with handloom sarees. As with folk-art sarees, again threaded tribal neckpieces look best. Kohl lined eyes with chunky necklaces and desi sarees are the in thing this season.

Other determinants like how chunky or how thin you should wear depends on your structure. Generally women with broad frames can carry heavy pendants and thick strings. This part you would understand better by trying on necklaces in the store while buying.

Younger girls should go for small pendants and studs as it is the best for that age. These tips would come handy next time you are dressing for a day/night out. At least it won’t take up more than 5 minutes of your time to choose Perfect Necklace For Saree.

Nice post. I don’t wear saree much, in fact I can count the number of times I have worn one. But if a day comes where I get a sudden interest in sarees I will know how to accessorize them.
