About 2 years back, Clinique launched Superprimers in 6 variants. The other 5 variants were for colour correction for different skin tones and skin concerns. The Universal Superprimer is for all skin types, to smooth out the skin before applying foundation. I do not have many skin issues as such, apart from dryness around my nose and mouth. I picked up the Clinique Superprimer Universal because I was not looking for any kind of colour correction. My main aim was to find a primer with hydrating qualities which also covers my pores and give my skin a smooth finish for makeup to go on.

Packaging – Clinique Superprimer Universal comes in the signature Clinique packaging. A white box with pastel colour flower patterns and the name of the brand and product in Silver. The actual product comes in a white tube style packaging with a silver cap. The packaging is very sleek and easy to travel with. Ideal packaging for a primer.

Texture & Fragrance – The texture of this primer is cream like. But it is not greasy, instead it’s very lightweight and easy to apply and spread on the face. Once you apply it, it completely sinks into the skin without leaving any trace of it. The skin doesn’t feel sticky or filmy like many mattifying primers do. It leaves your skin smooth and matte for the foundation to go on. Since it is a water based primer, even while it smoothens my skin, it doesn’t make it dry. My skin feels hydrated and moisturised. It is fragrance free as mentioned in the description. I could not detect any fragrance as such.

My Experience

When this range got launched, I went looking for my ideal primer. After I listened to the SA explain this one at the Clinique store, I knew this was the right one for me, coz I was looking for a hydrating primer, which covers my dry areas and smoothens my pores and gives me an ideal skin to apply foundation on. In summers I usually skip moisturiser while using this primer, as it is hydrating enough. In winters and drier month I use a moisturiser under the primer.

Clinique Superprimer Universal works for me year round. Gives me a smooth and even skin without making it feel artificial or filmy. The best part about this primer is that you can wear it as it is, without any foundation. In summers I do that only or just add a bit of powder foundation for coverage and I am good to go. Since this primer doesn’t control oil, liquid foundations tend to melt off during the summers. I use it under liquid foundations only in winters. It has a cream consistency and the features of gel based primers. It helps my foundation stay on 2-3 hours more than it normally does. It is enriched with anti-oxidants, so it is very good for your skin. Being a water based, oil free and allergy tested primer, the Clinique Universal Superprimer is ideal for all skin types including sensitive acne prone skin.

Overall Thoughts

If you have a skin with minimal issues and are looking for a primer to hydrate, smoothen and enhance the wear time and look of your foundation, you can go for Clinique Superprimer Universal. If you are looking for oil- controlling primer, skip this one. Since it is oil-free, fragrance-free, allergy tested and enriched with any oxidants it is a suitable primer for all skin types. It is definitely good enough for me.
