Chanel Illusion d’Ombre are supposed to have this amazing hybrid gel cream consistency and created a major hype when they first came out in 2011 sending most make – up lovers scurrying. Lets see how Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Ebloui Eyeshadow faired on me.

Shade – Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Ebloui is a reddish brown cream eyeshadow with multi coloured shimmer that is predominantly gold and burgundy.  The colour looks gorgeous in its glass pot. This looks more burgundy on me and the shimmer lends a wonderful depth.  Unfortunately this makes my eyes look more deep-set than they actually are and so I cannot use this as an overall lid shade.  I can only use it in the crease and towards the outer edge of the eye.

Texture and Formula – Chanel says, “An innovative gel texture that is both soft and cushiony allows it to be worn as eye-shadow or eyeliner.  Includes a specially designed shadow/liner brush, developed specifically for this unique formula.”

And cushiony, this certainly is!  It actually has this little springy feel to it when you push down on the product.  A word of caution though, please don’t keep doing that as it messes with the integrity of the product.

The formula of Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Ebloui eyeshadow feels like a creamy gel when you use the given brush to apply.  It goes on easy and fixes pretty quickly, so you need to blend fast.

Pigmentation – This starts out pretty sheer but can be layered to build intensity.  Give it 3 to 4 layers and the colour is wonderfully rich and chocolaty with a hint of plum.  Again, I am not able to carry off this colour at full intensity since it makes my eyes look more bruised and red.

Staying Power – Layered over primer, Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Ebloui Eyeshadow has lasted me over 8 hours without significant smudging or creasing.  There is little or no fading.  You can depend on the Chanel to deliver quality!

Overall Thoughts

I did test Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Ebloui Eyeshadow while buying, but I guess I was so taken in by the texture and the wonderful ingenuity that I didn’t realise that the colour will not always work for me. So, even though this is a wonderful product, I don’t myself using it as often as I should.

The gel formula will definitely dry out with time and use.  The label indicates you should use it within 12 months of opening, and while I don’t always adhere to these labels strictly, this one will work best only for a year.  I have had mine for over a year and I can see that I will need to trash it pretty quickly.  Rather sad for such an expensive product.

I am sure I will not repurchase Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Ebloui, however I am pretty certain I will be trying out the other colours soon.
