Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit Light Medium Review

I jumped quite late into the bandwagon of contouring. I have a round face in dire need of contouring, added to that I am chubby. So I was naturally very fascinated and awed by the whole concept of contouring. But I was also afraid to explore it initially coz I did not have much experience with it and I did not want to end up looking like a clown. After countless tutorials and videos I got a hang of it and slowly became quite confident with the whole concept. There was no looking back after that. I started hoarding on stuff. How could I resist purchasing the most raved about contour kit? Hence I went ahead and got it. Here is my take on Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit Light Medium.

Packaging – Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit comes with 6 removable and refillable pans, housed in a sturdy cardboard kit/palette in black. The brand name and product name is engraved in rose-gold and silver respectively.

The bottom of the kit is magnetic, so the pans stay stuck and do not move unless you need to remove them.  The one disappointing factor is that it does not have a mirror on the inside. It would have been extremely convenient while travelling if it did. The pans are decently sized and contain a decent amount of product. The best part is that the pans can be replaced or refilled so you wouldn’t need to repurchase the complete set.

Shade – The kit comes in three shades. Light to Medium, Medium to Tan and Tan to deep. Hence it covers skin tones and needs.

The shade light to medium has six shades. Three for highlight and three for contour. The shades are described as: Vanilla, (pale cream), Banana (pale yellow), Sand (radiant chiffon), Java (mocha), Fawn (tawny), and Havana (warm russet). All the shades are matte finish, except Sand.

The top row has three shades which be used for setting the face or highlighting the face.

Vanilla:

Vanilla described as a pale cream is a light flesh/beige toned matte powder which can be used as setting powder for the entire face. It works well as setting powder for my face.

Banana:

Banana described as pale yellow is exactly that. This shade can be used for setting the under eye post applying the concealer. The yellow shade acts in context of brightening the under eye areas and counter acts against the under eye darkness.

Sand:

Sand described as radiant chiffon looks very similar to Vanilla at first glance. But on closer look you can see it has a subtle shimmer and it’s more of light peachy pink toned. It works well as a highlighter for the cheeks and brow bone. The shimmer particles are quite subtle and they give and iridescent luminous glow to the skin and aren’t glowy in the obvious sense.

The bottom three shades can be used for contouring and bronzing purposes.

Java:

Java described as mocha is a matte brown. It is the perfect brown shade. I prefer to use it alone as bronzer or on top of fawn. Either way I do not use it alone for contouring.

Fawn

Fawn is described as tawny. It’s more of a taupey shade with greyish undertones. It is my perfect shade for contouring. It looks the most natural of the three when used for contouring my cheeks, jawline and nose. I add a little bit of Java on top at times to warm my cheeks a lot. And as funny as it sounds I use it at times to do my brows. It is not the perfect shade, but it does the job of filling it nicely.

Havana:

Havana described as warm russet is the only shade which I do not use. It is a deep brown with an organgish/reddish undertone. If I apply it on my face it looks like someone punched me on the face. I am still in confusion about how to use this shade.

Texture & Finish – The texture of all these powders in the Contour Kit is soft and finely milled. But it’s not too buttery either. They have the right consistency for application and blending on the sin. Of the lot only Banana is a bit powdery, but not chalky. It works well for under eye highlight. All the shades have a matte finish on the skin except Sand. But even Sand has a very subtle shimmer and it gives the skin a natural looking luminous glow. All the powders blend easily into the skin and give a smooth finish.

Pigmentation & Staying Power – The powders in Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit are decently pigmented. They have enough colour payoff to show up on the skin at first swipe but not so pigmented that you can go overboard. You can easily layer and build it up to your desired effect without making it look OTT.

The staying power is quite good for the darker colours. Can’t say the same for lighter colours, especially Vanilla. Banana also wears off after a few hours. Both these powders need touch ups after 4-5 hours respectively. The darker colours stay on for 7-8 hours though.

But that maybe coz of the fact that I sweat a lot in summers. In winters the wear time is definitely more.

Overall Thoughts

Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit is definitely a good investment for people who love contouring and highlighting. The shade selection allows all skin tones to pick the right shades for them.

The palette is quite sturdy and travel friendly. The best past is all the pans are removable and refillable, so you needn’t purchase the whole palette when you run out of one shade. All the qualities and the amount of product make it definitely worth the money. I do recommend it to people who love contouring and sculpting their face.

Rating – 4.25/5 (For lack of mirror and inability to use one shade)
